TIPS FOR DECORATING YOUR SUGAR SKULLS
- For Our Youngest Artists: Don’t be afraid to get hands-on! If the icing bag is a bit tricky to handle, feel free to use your fingers to "paint" and decorate your sugar skull directly for a fun, tactile experience.
- Plan Your Design: For more advanced artists, consider sketching your ideas on paper first. You may also make a few very light pencil strokes directly onto the sugar skull (NOT YOUR WHOLE DESIGN); please do so gently, as pencil marks cannot be erased from the sugar surface.
- Prepare Your Tools: Cut the metallic foil into your desired shapes. When you're ready to decorate, use scissors to snip just the very tip of the icing bag. Test it on a piece of paper first; you can always cut a bit more if you prefer a thicker flow of icing. It’s always best to start small!
- Precision Details: Keep a toothpick or a small wooden skewer nearby to help maneuver the icing.
- The Finishing Touch: If you wait a few minutes for the icing to begin to set, you can use your fingertips to gently press or shape it. Your hands are your best tools!

...ADDING DECORATIONS
- Use the colored icing to decorate your skull and as "glue" to secure your decorations in place.
- The metallic foil can be cut into different shapes for the eyes, earrings, and teeth, or into a rectangle for a name tag to place on the forehead. Let your imagination soar!
- Once your sugar skull is completely dry, it will last as a beautiful keepsake for years to come.
- Get inspired and have fun decorating this special Mexican tradition for your altar de muertos!

CAN I EAT THE SUGAR SKULL???
For your eyes only! While they aren't toxic, due to the hand-crafting process and decorations, they are not food-safe.
